Controls:

WASD to move.

MOUSE to interact.

Manipulation is a rogue-lite that plays like an interactive escape room with dialogue challenges and other minigames you complete to get clues, stay undetected, and find your way out. You play as a secret telepath trying to find your way out of an unknown facility. You don’t know where your body is or how to get out. But you’ve managed to gain control of at least one mind for now. Where you go from here is up to you.

Manipulation (working title) was designed for the Pirate Software - Game Jam 16 with the theme "You are the weapon."  The game should be fairly bug free, but I did only get about 12 hours to playtest and debug thoroughly before the due date. If you find problems please let me know so I can get them fixed. :)

The game jam also requires a GDD which was created very early on and may not reflect how things turned out in the end. Here's the link to that:

My goal was to allow the player a few different ways to complete most of the challenges, but I ended up a bit cramped on time. Some of the earlier puzzles and challenges have a few ways to complete them, the middle of the game gets a bit more restricted. And the end was a lot more rushed than I would've liked. Hopefully I'll have time and energy to continue developing and adding more if as time goes on. Hope you enjoy!

Disclosures:

  • I did not have time to draw every character's sprite sheets like I wanted. Sorry if theres a few repeats.
  • I did not have time to finish all the dialogue for the characters. A few may show up as "test," but should not break the game and it is not required to finish the game.
  • You'll notice when you hover over a character it'll say your current character's name and a number by it. This was intended to display the other character's thoughts of whoever you're playing as. The idea was that the thoughts would also change depending on how many times you interacted with them. I simply didn't have the time to write out what would essentially be 216 (9*8*3) more unique lines, but i didn't want to remove it in case of problems. So it is what it is for now.
  • There is no sound to the game. I decided to focus more on quality gameplay and unique content over branching into new areas I'm not quite as familiar with.

Art: Huge shout out to MalibuDarby's CyberPop asset pack I found here on itch. Super cool stuff in there with lots of diversity. Pretty much everything in this game that's pixelated is from this pack. I did do a few of my own pixel art pieces and modified some of the pack's character sprite sheets to create some of the other characters. Here's a link to the pack: https://malibudarby.itch.io/cyberpop-interior-tiles

Dialogue system: There is an AWESOME free addon made by DeveloperEzra that I found on youtube. It's got a really clean UI and a pretty easy to figure out implementation process. It makes use of dictionaries and JSONs in a way I really like. Here's the link to the video where I discovered it and he goes over how to use it: www.youtube.com/watch?v=WVflfiKjXgk&list=PL-kKSu6L3jSLWODRMb4VqNAtkbVhSQAAi&inde... Massive thanks to him.

Everything else: Myself

Also big thanks to everyone who helped me playtest this the night before this was due. Lol. Much appreciated.
